Young lawyers make a date in Luxembourg

The International Association of Young Lawyers (AIJA) will come back to its roots when it hosts its November conference in Luxembourg.

The organisation, which was founded as a not-for-profit in Luxembourg in 1962 and is now based in Brussels, is expected to welcome hundreds of lawyers from firms around the world.

AIJA Deputy Secretary General and Luxembourg-based lawyer Nicolas Thieltgen said: “I have been actively involved with AIJA since 2007 and have tremendously benefited from the array of issues covered whilst enjoying the social opportunities offered. Luxembourg is certainly ready to welcome the world’s leading young lawyers in November 2013.”

When Luxembourg plays host it may, however, struggle to attract the record-breaking numbers recorded at the last conference hosted in Helsinki at the end of May. Altogether 270 lawyers aged 45 and under attended the four-day event covering subjects including employment law and arbitration.

The attendance levels were particularly pleasing since they show an improvement of fortunes in the legal industry, which has been in crisis since 2009. Despite, the downward trend, AIJA has welcomed 1,200 new members during the last four years.

The next major event for the network will be an annual conference held in Buenos Aires in September 2013.
